Brian first started playing when he attended secondary school at the age of 12. His peripatetic teacher was Frank Renton who at that time was in the band of the Blues & Royals who were based nearby at Windsor.
With encouragement from Frank he joined the army in 1966 and after a year at The Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall served with the Band of the Life Guards. His duties with the band included trooping the colour and beating retreat on Horseguards Parade in London. The band also did the rounds of seaside bandstands including Bournemouth, Eastbourne and Jersey.
When he left the army he did not play for some time but eventually was tempted to join Moulton 77 Brass.
He joined Daventry Brass in 2008.
